OUR TREES: An Albuquerque Legacy by Elizabeth C. Doak

During the month of March we marked the completion of the first phase of the Silver Hill Reforestation Project.  We normally start our outdoor activities accompanied by the silent rain of "Tingley Flakes"; those wafer-like seed pods of the Siberian Elm that collect in thick batches along our curbs and in our gardens.  On Silver Avenue the spectacular elms that bore this seed are gone.  Two hundred and twenty young trees that represent a sampling of mostly native New Mexican, drought tolerant and disease resistant species, have replaced them,  The young Burr Oaks, Chisos Red Oaks, New Mexico Live Oaks, Chinese Pistache, Lacebark Elms, Chinquapin Oaks, and Soapberries will grow into the second, prized canopy of the neighborhood.

Former Mayor Clyde Tingley's vision of a tree-canopied, high-desert city gifted Silver Hill with a signature landscape architecture that gracefully defined our streets for over three generations.  It contributed to our feeling of shared community, and it was a feature loved and and recognized as simply magnificent by all of Albuquerque's residents.  Therefore, the planning for the restoration of our cherished landscape was long and arduous.  It evolved over three decades as the declining condition of the trees themselves demanded very difficult choices to be made by Silver Hill residents.

The collaboration between the City, the County, the State Historic Preservation Office, the landscape architects, and the neighborhood has culminated in the successful execution of one of the largest urban reforestation projects in the nation.  This is no small accomplishment during an era when cities have on the average lost thirty percent of their urban canopies.  Few have plans to turn back the trend due to stretched resources.  Yet, trees add immeasurable environmental, economic and psychological value to city living.

We were honored to have all the guests with us on Saturday, March 26th, who contributed to our neighborhood reforestation and helped us spearhead the goals set out in 2001 in our "Silver Hill Streetscape Manifesto".  We have laughed.  We have cried.  And we look forward to walking with you in the shade.

Silver Avenue Sprouts New Look by Jan Jonas (Albuquerque Tribune, March 26, 2005) - JJONAS@ABQTRIB.COM / 823-3827

When Michele Baldwin Moved into the Silver Hill neighborhood four years ago, there was a canopy of stately elms, but they were dying.

Today, the elms are gone, but new hope is springing up in their place.  In the median along eight blocks of Silver Avenue Southeast are 200 spindly new saplings.

The neighborhood will celebrate the completion of its tree planting from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. today in the 1900 block of Silver Avenue Southeast.

The Clyde Tingley house on Silver will be open for tours.

When Tingley was Mayor in the 1920s, about 96 elms were planted along Silver. By the late 90s they were reaching the end of their life cycle.

In 1998, the Silver Hill neighborhood association asked what plans the city can conceived for renewing the area.  It didn't have one, association president Bill Cobb said.

So the group went to the legislature in 1999, pressing for funds to develop a plan.

It took five years to complete the plan and accumulate the necessary money, Cobb said.  Money from city bonds and the legislature was committed to the project.

That paid for Phase I of a multi-phase plan to spiff

up the area bordered by Yale Boulevard on the east, Sycamore Street on the west, Central Avenue on the north, and Hazeldine Avenue on the south.

"This project is intended to be the first step in a community revitalization effort," Cobb said.

The neighborhood association "chose a palette of trees that are not widely used in city streetscape projects," Cobb said.  "They are native in New Mexico or climate-adapted."

Phase II, along Gold Avenue, is being planned, with construction scheduled to begin in the fall, Cobb said.

"The time frame is open," he said.  "We intend to keep plugging along until we have restored all of the historic streetscape."
